To foundation or not to foundation, that is the question when it comes to creating a solid palette for a look. And although in recent years there has been innovation is the world of foundation and powder with M.A.C Studio Fix in the '90s and anything by Laura Mercier during the last decade, L'Oreal recently released a foundation that could revolutionize your routine. Magic Smooth Souffle Foundation is easy to apply (although I find that fingers work better than a brush in this case for fine tuning) feels like velvet once on and blends with skin tone seamlessly. Now, if only you could eat it.
It took some years, but I’ve finally come to love my oily skin. It’s hard not to see a natural 24-hour facial glow as a blessing. But what isn’t much of a blessing is the oily film that forms on my eye lids causing my eye shadow to slowly slip away.
Luckily there exists Smashbox’s Photo Finish Lid Primer to put an end to every girl’s greasy lid sorrows. Packed with vitamins, the formula glides on to smooth the surface of the eyelid, creating a perfect base for eye makeup application and soaking up every bit of extra oil along the way.
But not to fret, my dry lid friends! The product work equally well on normal or dry skins. The creamy formula helps to fill in fine lines and wrinkles and contains Phytomoist™, a plant-based hyaluronic acid that moisturizes the skin, allowing for a smooth application of eye shadow.
With just a little, all skin types can enjoy the immense staying power this product brings to your makeup application. The added bonus? Sweep a bit under your eyes and watch the bags and fine lines disappear!
Sally Hansen Natural Beauty: Inspired by Carmindy
When the little makeup artist that could hooked up with the cosmetic behemoth, amazing things were bound to happen, which is what did when What Not to Wear celebrity makeup artist Carmindy and nailcare giant Sally Hansen struck an unusual partnership. The new Natrual Beauty Line - Inspired by Carmindy! NOT about nails and paraben-free!
Paraben is a chemical preservative found in almost evey cosmetic and skincare product producted for the mass market. Handy in that increases the shelf life of my favourite undereye cream, not so great in that said undereye cream is releasing possibly harmful chemicals into the skin around my peepers. With the natural beauty movement, parabens are often the first to go.Good riddance I say.
The new Sally Hansen line includes blushes, eyeshadows, lip colour and concealers as well as a primer to help you set everything in motion. And best of all, it has less "junk" in it for me to worry about.
Out of all the items in my makeup bag, none feel as essential to me as Dior’s Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen. I first discovered this pen during my brief séjour in France and was immediately addicted – I stocked my suitcase with a handful before coming home. Why the high praise? If you suffer from dark circles you probably know the drill: concealers either don’t cover them or they go on too thick, leaving your under-eye skin looking cakey and uneven. Unlike traditional concealers, the Radiance Booster Pen is incredibly sheer and leaves the skin with a dewy and plumped texture. The pen does not cover the delicate skin under your eyes; it injects it with a light-booster complex that instantly illuminates shadowy areas. If you’re not planning a trip to France anytime soon, fear not: the pen is available throughout Canada at Sephora (1-877-SEPHORA).
Temptu AIRbrush Makeup System
It may seem ridiculously complicated, a tad "over the top" for everyday use and vaguely resemble something you might choose to keep in your bedside table rather than on your vanity, but the Temptu AIRbrush Makeup System is none of the above. Designed by the same people that make starlets look sensational, the makeup system comes with the airbrush, the airbrush compressor and complete instructions to make sure you get flawless coverage and look that will last all day. The AIRpods, which include foundation, highlighter and blush (which can double as a lip colour) are sold separately and run you the cost of a prestige brand foundation — well worth it. Vary the "pressure" to vary the coverage, enjoy the slight breeze when you apply, and face the day with confidence.

Bailey Cosmetics If you're like me, Saturdays involve a lot of running around, rather than the preferred sipping of a latte while reading the latest fashion rag cover to cover. Most of it is spent out of the house, and by the time I make it back, all I want to do is turn on the television, even though I don't have one. This Saturday though, I have a date. At 11am, with Canadian fashion designer Brian Bailey and the Shopping Channel. Brian will be officially launching Bailey Cosmetics and it is something, not to be missed. I had the pleasure of meeting the Fab Four (President Kathryn McKeil, Celebrity Makeup Artist Maryellen Howe, Cosmetics Developer Gerald Poirier and Creative Lead Brian Bailey) and getting a first-hand look at how they came up their "5 Easy Pieces", the must-have tool kit and the "Powder of Youth". Paraben-free, mineral makeup, in recyclable aluminum containers — a lovely way to ring in Earth Day!
This concealer kit by Benefit Cosmetics is a makeup bag must. It comes with the essentials you need to turn a tired, puffy face into a pretty, presentable one. There are six mini products in the kit as well as two tiny brushes and even a mirror!
What I love about this product is that it offers colour correctors. If your eyes are red from a long day at the office, a dab of yellow to the inside corner of each eye will offer an instant boost. The erase paste (bottom left corner) is also quite magical. Add this to any unwanted spot - sudden pimple or dark circles – and the concealer will blend and smooth everything out.
Cover FX Camouflage ConcealerJust as I had come to terms with my horrendous hereditary under eye circles that NO concealer would cover, Cover FX sent me a little package from heaven. Cleverly named camouflage, that’s exactly what Cover FX’s concealer did for my perma-tired looking eyes. The best thing about it is it isn’t cakey. It goes on nice and smooth and stays that way throughout the day. It’s also fabulous for dark spots, blemishes, and though I haven’t tested this use out, it claims to even cover tattoos! This precious gem is available at Shoppers Drug Mart, The Bay and Sephora.
